Natural Immune System Boosters

Since we've been hit by this corona virus pandemic we need to do all we can to protect ourselves from being exposed to it. Having sickle cell diseases means that we're immunocompromised. This means that we're more at risk of contracting the virus than people with stronger immune systems. Realizing all of this can make you anxious, but don't stress yourselves because there are things you can do to help prevent you from getting the virus. The most important thing for you to do is practice social distancing when you're out and self-quarantine when you don't have to go out. Don't leave your house if you don't have to. Only go out for important things, like picking up your medicine from the pharmacy or going to a doctor's appointment (you can't postpone). Stay as safe as you possibly can.

Here are a few tips you can follow to protect yourself from the corona virus:

1. Thoroughly wash your hands every 20 minutes.

2. Wear a mask when you leave your house.

3. Stay 6 ft. away from people when you go out.

4. Drink room temperature or warm water every 20 minutes to flush any bacteria that you may have in your mouth into your stomach.

5. Cover your mouth when you cough.

6. Use hand sanitizer or antibacterial wipes to keep your hands clean while you're out or at work.

If you use or want to use holistic or organic remedies to help boost your immune system, here's a list of things you can try:

*echinacea (supplements, tea, etc.)

*sour sop or sour sop leaves (for tea)

*elderberry (extract, supplements, etc.)

*zinc (supplements, shell fish, almonds, oranges, etc.)

*water (at least 6 glasses a day)

*probiotics (kombucha, apple cider vinegar w/mother, yogurt, supplements, etc.)

*vitamin D (limited sun exposure, fish, eggs, cod liver oil, etc.)

Going through something as serious as a pandemic can be difficult and stressful. However, we can get through this. We have been fighting viruses and infections all our lives, so this is nothing new to us. We are warriors and we will come out of this stronger as long as we do all we can to stay safe and healthy. I have faith in us and I look forward to seeing all of you at the other end of this pandemic!
